Why Parallax Design is Not an Advised Web Design

Over the past couple of decades, there has been continuous evolution in the World Wide Web, where the web developers had to adopt to lot of changes in the way the websites are designed. Right from the basic HTML Design to Flash websites to DWT to Web 2.0 and to the recent past responsive and parallax designs. Each of these techniques has enjoyed its own duration of success until a successor claimed the share of web market demands. One technique that had unique market need is parallax design.

What is Parallax Design?

Downfall of Parallax Design

Parallax designing is a way by which a website is designed as a single page with a scrolling effect.  In other word, parallax design helps you create a 3D effect with visual elements that move at different dimension. The whole contents of the website will be loaded at once and the complete information is shown at a glance. Some of the vital considerations during Parallax design would be to have best-in-class UI, control over scrolling speed in align with background images used so that it provided a pleasing look and feel for the visitor. The UX experts may also have a combination of objects and elements to have additional visual effects.

How does this help in making business?

Generally, call to action approach is used to make the visitor to play around with website. UX experts feel that this keeps the visitor engaged with the website and reduces the bounce rate. On the other hand, say for a website that sells a product(s), a story telling approach is being used. Yes, this fits for a product to display its features using sort of animation or interaction. You can think of this as the advancement of the earlier Flash approach. Most visitors admire if the product is narrated in this way rather than a paragraph of text.

Why some designers lean towards parallax design?

  1. Storytelling approach
  2. It could capture the attention of visitors (Only if they keep scrolling)
  3. Entire navigation would be on a single page
  4. UI could enhance sites creditability

While there are some great things about Parallax design, we should also share some insights on what caused the downfall of the same. In my opinion, most designers missed a great deal on understanding the feel of the visitors and the optimal speed of narration. In addition, below are a few points which I feel could have an impact on the downfall of the parallax website.

  1. Most designers forget about internal linking and lose out on SEO
  2. Excessive scrolling can cause a visitor to close even before moving
  3. The extent of backward compatibility for older browsers
  4. Most mobile browsers do not have full support for parallax design
  5. As this need s lot of images to be loaded, there is always a compromise between performance vs presentation

With the ever growing popularity of handheld devices, the demand for design for one and use for many has been the current trend.
